Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Stephen C — 14 Jul 2008
Herzog shot this film with a camera he stole from a University in Berlin,he felt rather than the camera sitting there doing nothing it should be put to good use.
And what good use he put it to,from the outstanding opening shot of the Train of conquitadors and there slaves trooping down the mountain path,to the outstanding final shots of Kinski Clearly out of his mind on a raft full of spider monkeys.
This was the film that put both Herzog and Kinski on the map and would lead to one of the most bizzare actor/director partnerships in film history .
Herzog would return to the theme of Man and Nature both in his Films (Fitzcarroldo,Rescue Dawn) and his documentaries (Grizzly man).
A film of great power which improves with each viewing.
