Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Jesus G — 28 Aug 2008
Werner Herzog has created 2 masterpieces: Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre...haven't figured out yet which one is his Sgt. Pepper's yet. Watched this very very good movie when I was a teen and re-watched it recently to see if the effect was the same...ahh....YEP!
The final revolving camera shot still puzzles me. You have to understand and know the history of this movie before watching it. Herzog's nuts and Kinski was seriously a madman, plus they used real indigenous people to make the movie.
My best description of the movie: Take away the polish, opulent look of conquistador movies and replace it with gritty, documentary-realism.
Jesus' Checklist of coolness:
1) KLAUS KINSKI...Check!
2) Violence....Check!
3) Strange camera shots...Check!
4) Forgetting is an actual movie...Check!
Love Herzog?...Watch Aguirre.
