Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Vikram K — 29 Mar 2009
A surreal, haunting and visually stunning depiction of human obsession with power, and the inevitable descent into madness and suffering, as symbolized by the journey along a river in the forest("On this river God never finished his creation"); amply aided by Popol Vuh's transcendental soundtrack and Klaus Kinski, who gives a performance of such understated determination and intensity, yet managing to ooze a terrifying insanity; the "I am the Wrath of God" soliloquy at the end, where a crazy Aguirre is surrounded by his dead soldiers and monkeys, is powerful and poignant.
Masterpiece!
