Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Sherry L — 15 Nov 2009
Despite the fact that I have been spoiled with plenty of very good movies lately, I found this movie to be something special. Wow! This is Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog's first film together, but I think it might as well be the best.
The plot takes place in the 16th century, and an expedition of conquistadors are looking for El Dorado. The ruthless and insane, Aguirre, who calls himself The Wrath of God, is the leader that will do ANYTHING to lead the group to El Dorado, where he is going to be king.
Several conflicts occur among the members of the expedition, leading to one thing and another.
When you first hear the name El Dorado, you know that this expedition is not to find any El Dorado (cause we learned in school that it was a mythological place, right?), this expedition is going to find their way down to hell! They are already doomed! And of course they get lost in the amazon jungle, helpless when the cannibals are hiding behind the bushes. But this movie is about soo much more then that! I think the highlight is Kinski's intensive portrayal of Aguirre, who despite everything that happens, believes that he is gonna make it to his kingdom.
Incredibly beautiful filmed, and good directing.
This is a tales about greedy human beings, and what supposedly happens to too greedy human beings.
I strongly recommend this movie!
