Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Steven C — 10 Mar 2011
A quintessential depiction of ambition against nature leading to madness. Aguirre isn't as refined as Herzog's later masterpiece on a similar theme, Fitzcarraldo, and it gets demerits for a few scenes of goofy slapstick.
But it's got a classic demented lead performance from Klaus Kinski and sustains a creepy, hallucinatory mood.
