Yes, it is essential. Yes, the actors (actors?) are laughable in their slackness. Yes, the pathetic blood effects are there for the glory of Aguirre. Yes, there are ten guys pretending to be a whole army.
Yes, the excruciatingly slow pacing can make you feel the pain of the characters. Yes, its shamefully inserted comedy makes me cry. And the message is so powerful, so amazing, I think I have only heard it nine million times before and after this movie.
Overrated? Nah.
