Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by James-Masaki R — 16 Jul 2011
Werner Herzog's "Aguirre" is so visceral and amazing enough as it is, but when you hear the behind-the-scenes stories, the movie often gets eclipsed by the horrors behind the horrors. The death threats, the near death experiences, the madness, all of course prior to the "Apocalypse Now" terror behind the scenes.
Where do you think Coppola got the inspiration for the madness in the jungle? Kinski pulls his all in this one too, as Herzog demanded insanity and he got it completely! One of the best indie cult movies of all time! All done with a stolen film school camera.
