Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Catherine N — 13 Nov 2011
Aguirre, the wrath of god as he calls himself, is the general of a small army set out to find El Dorado or the land of gold. He overthrows his commander and takes control of the group declaring themselves as rebels. the film follows the arduous journey of the group to find their xanadu.
The altercations between the group and the indians is very well shot with tense stretches of silence. As days pass, they run out of rations and food, a state of quandary follows.
As Aguirre refuses to take cognisance of the health of his army , the dwindling number of soldiers battle hard to survive. The extent to which the soldiers are exhausted is depicted in an ironic scene at the end, where they can hardly differentiate between reality and imagination. By declaring it as one of THE BEST is frankly not a hyperbole.
