Review of Aguirre, the Wrath of God (1972) by Robert G — 29 Aug 2014
With very charismatic acting from Klaus Kinski and Werner Herzog's low-key and atmospheric direction "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" is a mesmerizing, haunting viewing experience that I will never forget.
This particular experience is witnessing a megalomaniac corrupting and manipulating good people into adopting his lies and exploiting their delusions of power while chasing a hopeless dream. The film remains thoroughly grim and somber yet entrancing due to the use of juxtaposition where Agurrie's determination to find the non-existent city of Gold becomes more prominent as his situation become more and more dire.
Also the cinematography is beautiful and the period detail is very authentic causing the the film to be ever more compelling.
