Review of Agora (2009) by Michael C — 22 Jun 2010
An excellent dramatisation of the waning days of the Roman Empire, just before the blood-soaked rise of Christianity precipitated the Dark Ages. The peaceful, kind-hearted Hypatia and her far-seeing research into astronomy are juxtaposed against the increasingly brutal sectarian violence wreaked upon the people of Alexandria by Christian monks and their ignorant followers; the stylised ending highlights not only the cost to progress that religion exacts, but also the loss of love that religion causes.
