Review of Agora (2009) by Amilcar A — 24 Jul 2010
Agora is a crazy movie that could create a lot of controversy if anyone actually watched it. It would certainly piss off a lot of Christians and you'd see loons from all over the spectrum calling for Rachel Weisz head. Also, Agora is a movie made and directed by Spaniards and funded by Canal + but it's in English and has no Spanish actors. Go figure.
Agora is essentially about the transition period in Alexandria in the last years of the Roman Empire. It focuses on three things: the philosopher Hypatia, the destruction of the Great Library (probably one the greatest intellectual crimes in history) and the emergence of Christianity as a major, manipulative and corrupted religion.
The movie runs much like the old epic classics and has no shortage of swords, beheadings and destruction. However it also has a great storyline about discovery, knowledge and science.
Agora is a great movie that very few people will see - even on video - and that is a huge waste. It is the kind of movie where people actually can learn something and it would be a major counterpoint to any Adam Sandler movie or TV series.
Really good movie with a lot of potential discussion points if there was only someone to watch it with.
