Review of Agora (2009) by Jc E — 21 Oct 2010
This is one of those head scratcher films. It has the credentials to be a good movie, from having Alejandro Amenabar (The Others) in the director's chair, to having Rachel Weisz (The Mummy) in the lead.
However, the story suffers greatly from unrealized potential and choppiness that wasn't expected. This isn't the films truest detriment though; that lies squarely with the anti-Christian sentiment that the story pushes.
I could launch into a tirade on where the film is wrong to deem Christianity the way it does regardless of the historial accurracy or significance, but that would legitimize the writers intentions. The love triangle between Weisz, Max Minghella (The Social Network), and Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood) is exceedingly complicated due to the lackluster intentions on all sides.
Still, Dario Marianelli's (Pride & Prejudice) score is beautiful, and the film has some beautiful telescoping work. It's just too bad that Weisz's performance and the better elements are burried under the weight of the rest of the film.
