Review of Agora (2009) by Alonzo H — 30 Oct 2010
Especially considering the times we're living in these days, the director's choice for a protagonist and the subject matter as a whole is like a refreshing breath of air. We could all use a good trip down history lane to remind us of what happens when we forgo our better rational senses and instead favor superstitious dogma as means to govern our every day lives. The contrast between the contributions of well reasoned thought & science as opposed to fanatical religious allegiance was brilliantly depicted. Not only has this movie called my attention to a fascinating historical event that is seldom known of, It also brings to light the story of a strong, bold & intelligent woman (Hypatia) as well as her profound (albeit little known) contributions towards our modern scientific knowledge. This movie has without a doubt introduced me to my latest inspiration and personal hero. Everyone owes it to themselves to check-out this film.
A well earned Hat Tip to you, Alejandro Amenabar!
