Review of Agora (2009) by Adrian E — 28 Dec 2010
Lush set and costumes brings 4th century Alexandria alive, and Rachel Weisz is dynamic as Hypatia, a philosopher and mathematician who advocates for justice and tolerance in a multicultural society that teeters on the brink of religious warfare.
(Yet she fails to see the injustice of her own behavior towards her slaves.) As the various groups battle for power, mob action often is seen from above, sped up to resemble ants. And distant views of the city from outer space provide an intriguing tie from those ancient times to modern times.
I was so fascinated that I watched the DVD's whole 1-hour special feature on the making of the film.
