Review of Agora (2009) by James D — 11 Apr 2011
This was a really interesting film for me, because it is one of the first I have seen that really shows the dangerously violent element of early Christianity that a lot of history books tend to skip over.
Rachel Weisz was amazing as the atheist philosopher Hypatia, and the story overall was told very well and very closely to the true story, at least as closely as possible considering the condition of historical records of the time.
I loved how the story between Hypatia and Davus, while completely fictional, was added without compromising the history and truly dramatic scale of the film. Definitely worth a watch if you enjoy historical dramas, strong female leads, and a grittier look at how Christianity really got its start.
