Review of Agora (2009) by Brenton A — 09 May 2011
The ambition to make a movie that is simultaneously big and small should always be lauded, as should the gall to make a movie that portrays early Christians in a negative light. But these grand ideas get muddled in a sloppy handling of the details.
From the beginning, it is clear that Agora lacks a coherent narrative structure - it never seems to be going anywhere, only meandering aimlessly. And it's never quite clear who is the audience of this film - the intellectual themes and occasionally quirky direction should appeal to the more thoughtful viewer, but the simple dialogue seems to be written for a slightly less knowledgeable crowd.
