Review of Against the Ropes (2004) by Jack D — 17 Aug 2004
Against the Ropes (2004) Meg Ryan, Omar Epps, Tony Shalhoub, Kerry Washingotn, Tim Daly, Charles S. Dutton, Joseph Cortese, Skye McCole Bartusiak, D: Charles Dutton. Growing up in her father?s boxing gym, Jackie Kallen, the first female boxing promoter, breaks out of her dead-end secretary job and comes across a talented but raw street fighter (Epps), whom she knows is the Real Deal.
After convincing him to let Jackie be his manager, she hires a veteran trainer (Dutton) and they make Epps the champion of the ring. Entertaining, and the actors are good, but it leaves more to be desired.
As Kallen?s true story, it has no depth, and it?s also no different from any other clichéd prize-fighting movie. Running Time: 111 minutes and rated PG-13 for crude language, violence, brief sensuality, and some drug material.
** ½.
