Review of Against the Dark (2009) by Ron C — 26 Jul 2009
A martial arts zombie/vampire film. I looked forward to watching this. Combining my love of horror and my guilty love of Steven Seagal films. Although the horror aspects of this film were pretty good. Some nice gore FX and jumpy moments.
Seagal doesnt turn up till about 40 minutes into the film and then has very little to do. Tanoai Reed takes part in most of the martial art fight scenes and the rest of the film is taken up by a group of characters I could care less about trying to find there way out of a hospital the size of a small country.
I have to pick out Danny" I'm a cockney" Midwinter as being practicably bad. Also at one point during this film Jenna Harrison thinks her husband has been killed. But when he turns up later alive, she doesnt even acknowledge him? WTF? Also there are some obvious stereotypes and if not a little racist? The bad military general, who just happens to be black and the mad scientist who is German.
I can not class this as a Seagal film or even a very good Horror film. They had a nice premise for what could have been a great and truly original film but they totality dropped the ball!
