Review of Against All Odds (1984) by Ola G — 17 Jul 2009
Los Angeles Outlaws receiver Terry Brogan (Jeff Bridges) is cut from the team because of a shoulder injury. He is in need of money and he finds himself getting a lucrative short term job from an old acquaintance, the nightclub owner and two bit hoodlum Jake Wise (James Woods). The job is to locate his girlfriend Jessie Wyler (Rachel Ward) who is hiding out somewhere in the Mayan Riviera. Jessie just happens as well to be the adoptive daughter of the Outlaws' ruthless owner, Grace Wyler. Once Terry finds Jessie, she is waiting for him, or at least someone sent by Jake. But without telling Jake, Terry decides to quit his job as he is falling in love with Jessie, who seems also to be falling in love with him. But it isn't until they get back to Los Angeles that Terry slowly sees the big picture of where he fits into Jake's life and to what extent Jake will go to get Jessie back.
Had to resee this one because of Rachel Ward... This is a classic 80s thriller that works for the first half. The second half is a bit scattered and unfocused I would say. Good acting from Bridges, Woods and Ward. Great carsequence in the beginning between Terry and Jake. And the theme song is a classic from Phil Collins. But, there is something that is missing. That little extra. So not bad, but "Against All Odds" is not going entirely all the way.
