Review of Afterschool (2009) by Phil N — 27 Feb 2010
Rob is a teenage boy at boarding school with a fascination for video clips on YouTube. Joining the Audio/Video club with his friend Amy, he captures a tragic event on camera which sends shockwaves through the school.
Itâ??s a slow-burn drama about voyeurism and isolation, quite tense and unsettling as youâ??re never quite sure which direction itâ??s heading. Camposâ??s direction â?? his first feature â?? is unusual but effective, using lots of long takes, slow pans and zooms as well as utilising a variety of styles for the filmed video footage.
An impressive debut.
