Review of After the Wedding (2006) by Jasmina J — 16 Dec 2008
As a general matter I dislike melodramas as most of them are awful. Boy is this film the exception!!! I have not seen other movies by this director or screenwriter but this film really crystallizes the meaning of life ( and family life) and the search for a meaningful existence in several ways.
The more I watched the more involved in the film I became. Art Direction and Cinematography are really excellent tops tops. I really think this is one of the best films of 2007. (along with The lives of Others also an excellent film and one of the best of 2007) ty burr of the Boston globe sums it up best for me I agree 100% "In After the Wedding, again with Jensen, she pushes the envelope further, toward operatic passion and the visual symbolism of Ingmar Bergman.
The new movie goes over the top, but more often than not a viewer goes with it, yanked along by the integrity and intensity of the emotions splattering the walls. Bier reminds us why we come to melodrama in the first place: To see our own dilemmas played out on an epic domestic scale.
" Other reviewers have rated this as only a 3 star melodrama. I heartily disagree!! Involving Plot Involving Characters Beautiful Cinematography Great Actors Bergmanesque Elements make for a marvelous two hours.
I give this film my highest recommendation.
