Review of After the Wedding (2006) by C K — 28 May 2010
I cannot think of many, if any flaws, in this film. It's not, however, for its lack of weakness that this film gets 5 stars. I loved the film because it evoked both a deep sense of appreciation for the protagonist's commitment to an orphanage in India but also the very real human drama and need among those in Denmark.
[SPOILER alert] The Rolf Lassgard character, who appears to oppose the Mads Mikkelsen character, emerges as both heroic and pitiful. I enjoyed the director's close-ups, though some have criticized them: I thought they brought appropriate drama and intimacy with the characters.
Another reviewed noted that this film shows Western self-absorption. I believe he missed the point entirely. It shows humanity's need of one another and individuals' ability to be heroic.
