Review of After the Sunset (2004) by Tom H — 02 Apr 2010
Let's see here, Pierce Brosnan, Woody Harrelson, Don Cheatle, Sölmu Hayek and the quality director Brett Ratner. With a cast like that and a director like that you are expecting something good if not great from them but even with a cast that does do a great job, the movie still fails because of a very thin script.
The weakest link in this film is that It has no idea if it wants to be an action comedy or a comedic action film and the movie suffers a lot for that. Nothing really works here and it doesn't matter if she is trying to be funny or serious, she always ends up just being mediocre or less. As an action film she fails because frankly there isn't enough action and tension to make it work and as a comedy, she isn't funny enough, it's that simple. The cast is the only bright spot here and I want to mainly mention Brosnan and Harrelson but they are both incredibly entertaining and make the film seem better then it is, at least for some time. Salma Hayek is also strong and delivers a solid performance plus she has never been hotter then right here.
The message of the story is solid and it's delivered quite nicely over the movie but the script is filled with cliches and unoriginality. You can safely guess what's going to happen next and because of that the movie doesn't leave a lot after it self. The only reason I am giving the movie this rating is because of very good performances from the cast.
4/10.
