Review of After the Sunset (2004) by Hardy H — 24 Mar 2011
You'd think it'd be nothing but fun watching hot actors sip drinks in the Bahamas whilst planning a major diamond heist. And you'd be wrong in this case because After The Sunset is a compendium of witless excitement, thanks to director Brett Ratner (Red Dragon) who can't inject any life into this hot mess.
Pierce Brosnan is Max, a jewel thief who heads out to the Caribbean with his lover, Lola (Salma Hayek). Max promises Lola he'll quit stealing and retire as a married man. But then the harbor is graced with the presence of a Napoleon diamond, with FBI agent Stan Lloyd (Woody Harrelson) in tow, a man who has been chasing the couple for several years.
Just when you want the plot to get interesting, it sputters miserably. Sure, the actors are having a ball, but we the audience are left bored out of our wits. The jokes are tepid (Harrelson reads a shark its rights before shooting it) and insult is added to injury when Max rents Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief on DVD.
It's a diamond in this filthy coal mine.
