Review of After Hours (1985) by Freddie R — 23 Feb 2009
I know this movie isn't perfect. I know it may be too weird for most. And I certainly know many wouldn't argue that it belongs in the same tier as the Scorsese masterpieces (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc.
) But dammit, if this isn't one of the most enjoyable things Scorsese has offered me as of now. Allow me to explain a few of the especially idiosyncratic plot points present here: A rogue 20-dollar bill.
Accidental assisted suicide. Paiper-mache sculptures. A vengeful neighborhood watch led by Catherine O-Hara in an ice cream truck. Wizard of Oz fetishes. Bagel-and-cream-cheese paperweights. And a mohawk-loving bouncer named Checkpoint Charlie.
This only begins to scratch the surface of one the most bizarre nights ever recorded on film this side of David Lynch. Did I mention it's absolutely hilarious?
