Review of After Hours (1985) by Joshua L — 18 Jan 2012
Made in the same vain as Kar Wai's "Chungking Express" in a hurry and as a place holder for a bigger more ambitious film, Martin Scorsese made a wonderful comedic odyssey that won him the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1985.
I could not think of a single more deserving recipient than him that year. To my dismay this film has been pushed aside by many Scorsese fans and hasn't gotten the recognition it deserves today. So I feel obliged to say that this is one of the best films Martin Scorsese has made.
Yes, this is the man who made such masterpieces as "Goodfellas", "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull", and "Mean Streets." I feel "After Hours" is more than welcome among those very fine films.
It just goes to show that how a film is made matters. The swiftness (the way Scorsese or Kar Wai as I mentioned earlier) or slowness (see the films of Kubrick or Malick for reference) of the filmmaking is always present and tangible when watching.
