Review of After Earth (2013) by Mloy X — 30 Jan 2014
Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith): Dad...
Cypher Raige (Will Smith): Yeah?
Kitai Raige (Jaden Smith): I wanna work with Mom.
Cypher Raige (Will Smith): Me too.
The cinematography was stunning! They captured some very gorgeous, not to mention real breathtaking locations. There was plenty of CG but I didn't mind since it was all very necessary to convey the story. The story was interesting and the execution was actually good, but the content wasn't really anything we haven't already seen before. Will Smith was alright; he was playing against the usual charismatic characters he normally plays. Jaden Smith wasn't bad but he wasn't all that great either. His part could have been cast by a more talented up and coming actor with less connection and could have potentially made a more compelling Kitai. Zoe Kravitz was an inspired choice since she was the best part of the film. Overall, this film wasn't horrible but could have benefitted with a bit more substantial acting from the lead and less nepotism.
