Review of After Death (2012) by Al M — 15 Mar 2014
I was surprised and delighted by the little twists and turns in this well-acted story of family dysfunction & reconnection through death. The action builds slowly, but draws you in organically as you get to know the characters, like reading a good book.
Then things start to get weird. The mix of ordinary family dynamics with themes of the spirit world feels right in the context of a recent death, but there's an offbeat, bizarro supernatural sci-fi element that takes the film to a different place altogether, yet never quite loses sight of the fear and love at the core of each character - living and dead - and in the family as a whole.
Unorthodox and deliciously, Britishly, idiosyncratic - loved it.
