Review of Africa United (2010) by Mike H — 27 Oct 2010
When I was a kid, back in the 13th Century, there used to be an organisation called the Children's Film Foundation. The CFF is fondly remembered for a few decent films and early appearances by a few actors that went on to be household names. As I remember it, however, the CFF produced a large number of vaguely worthy and slightly dull films that failed to hold my attention at Saturday Morning Pictures.
Africa United could have been made by the CFF. It's certainly vaguely worthy, covering issues like HIV, education and child soldiers and, sadly, it's ever so slightly dull, too.
The film really comes alive when the lead character, Dudu, tells stories that are portrayed as animated sequences, and they are wonderful animations. Could have done with a lot more of that and a little less reiteration that the kids walking across Africa are a team and all need each other.
Had this movie been shown at Saturday Morning Pictures, it wouldn't have been long before my friends and I were crawling between the rows of seats and generally making a nuisance of ourselves. Which was really why we went.
