James Coburn's performance as a snarling, swaggering, abusive drunk anchors this rather grim tale of his son Wade, a part-time cop in a small New Hampshire town and his attempts to make something out of himself after investigating a suspicious accident.
Nolte's Wade slowly unravels as everybody that he cares for is driven away by his personal demons, put in place Coburn's domineering. Great character study. Film makes good use of its locations, too.
