Review of Affliction (2008) by Amy U — 04 Aug 2008
Affliction is an emotionally ragged film that constantly subverts the conventions of the two genres, murder mystery and family drama, it straddles. Many people have criticized the voiceovers, particularly in the final sequence, but if one considers that the narrator might not be reliable, this only enhances the film's devastating effects.
No manipulation, no strong directorial presence, simply a fantastic story portrayed by actors who so inhabit their roles that what they do can hardly be called acting.
