Review of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016) by Shadab K — 20 Nov 2016
It would have rated 3.5 stars if it had ended at 75 mins, but it kept going on and on in endless repetition with excessive and gratuitous clichés (for example, Alizeh's cancer was an entirely unnecessary contrivance). Ranbir's 'chocolate boy' performance was over-the-top weepy and had me bored to tears after 90 minutes.
This could have been a far gritter, edgier film with a neat script and tight direction. Too bad, it instead wasted the talents of Anushka, Aish and Fawad and had me crying for escape toward the unforeseeable end. I almost mistook it for a D&D (David Benioff and DB Weiss) weekly special (c.f. the rubbish writing and direction of Seasons 5 & 6 of GoT).
