Review of Adventureland (2009) by Joe A — 17 Nov 2011
More drama than comedy. Flick has grown on me a bit since first viewed but, overall, nothing we haven't seen before. The cast is fairly bland not given much to do but look bored or upset most of the time.
Stewart is not nearly as awful as she was in Twilight and Eisenberg seems to be channeling Michael Cera. Ryan Reynolds is also far too likeable in a role of, basically, a douche. Only Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader as the husband/wife operators of the park offer any life to the procedings.
There are some nice moments though and there are some fun bits too but, still too much melodrama to be the comedy it was sold as. What it does do well, however, is capture that moment in youth between leaving high school and that brief moment in limbo before making that next step toward further education/work and adulthood.
It also poignantly portrays love at that period of time in life when you are not quite an adult but not a kid anymore. So things even out a bit when you add it all up and having graduated high school in the 80s, this film is nonetheless nostalgic for me so, I cut it a bit of slack for some of it's flaws.
