Adventureland is a nostalgic gem that may have been misunderstood as a raunchy comedy because it was billed as the director of Superbad.
Adventureland could not be more different than Superbad. Instead, Adventureland is a sweet coming-of-age story about a bunch of 20 somethings trying to find their way in the world after graduating college.
Adventureland really captures a time in a persons life that seems boring and uneventful when you are living it, but as you grow older you realize those were the best days of your life.
Adventureland is not overflowing with laughs, but Jesse Eisenberg and Stewart have nice chemistry and do a nice job of making us believe they could really have a relationship. SNL cast members Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig add the most laughs as the hapless couple that runs the park. I would have loved a few more scenes with these two.
Ryan Reynolds never seems to make an impact here. He just seems like a set piece used to propel certain storylines. I wasn't really sure to hate or love his character. We are never really given a chance to do either.
In the end, Adventureland doesn't try to reinvent the wheel, but with a strong cast and a killer 80's soundtrack, it's definitely worth the ride.
