Review of Adventureland (2009) by Dave M — 11 Feb 2013
A quiet comedy with a bit of an independent feel. Certainly a labor of love for director Greg Mottola who puts on his best off-beat comedy mixed with a dramatic edge direction. The story screams of personal experience and a love of all things John Hughes.
Who doesn't appreciate that? Jesse Eisenberg continues to be a personal favorite of mine because he doesn't exude confidence but never comes off as pathetic. Sounds like someone I know. It's a great cast all around and it keeps the movie interesting.
Probably the most appreciative aspect of the film is its spot on soundtrack of well timed 80s songs that really amp up the nostalgia factor and is key to the films style. Adventureland is a highly enjoyable film that will probably just get better with age much like Dazed and Confused (but not THAT good).
