Review of Adventureland (2009) by Kyle C — 15 Jul 2015
"Nothing brings people together like a crappy summer job.".
This isn't the typical movie I like, but what I continue to love about Adventureland is how real it is. The characters, situations, settings, dialogue, mannerisms, etc. are all real. The movie places us in someones shoes throughout the movie, from Joel, who has no chance with girls, to Connell, who is a married womanizer, who lies about his life to impress.
James has to take a job in Pittsburgh at Adventureland after his trip to Europe falls through. He's working to save up to move to NYC next year and enroll at Columbia. James soon meets Em, whose already seeing Connell, and that famous love triangle ensues.
I've seen this movie many times now and everytime, I expect to have outgrown it, but it seems I only forget how good it really is. Not a bad cast for a movie of this genre either. Jesse Eisenberg is always good, as a neurotic, awkward leading post-teen and Kristen Stewart, you either like her or you don't. These are the types of roles her style excels in. The supporting cast is nothing to get too excited about, but it's serviceable.
