Review of Adventureland (2009) by Jillian L — 01 Dec 2011
This movie completely exceeded my expectations. I mean, I did expect it to be funny, but not only was it that, but parts of it were quite poignant as well. This movie allowed the characters to massively screw up.
Normally, only "the bad guys" do. But there were no bad guys, just normal, actual people making human mistakes. That aside, this movie was also pretty hilarious. Jesse Eisenberg is spot on as Brennan, Ryan Reynolds is fantastic, Kristen Stewart exceeded expectations as well.
Her actor quirks (the biting nails/lip and the hair messing) actually really worked for this character. However, Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, as the owners of the park, almost stole the show. They both work really well off of each other and had some of the best laugh out loud moments of the entire movie.
Another nice thing about this one is that the characters are a little older than a typical raunchy teen comedy. These are people who are nearing the end of their college education or have finished it and are trying to figure out what to do next.
In my opinion, this point of view makes the story read so much clearer and actually have some meaning, than a typical recent high school grad bitching about what college to go to. Overall, a fun comedy that actually has some depth.
Go watch it :).
