Review of Adult Beginners (2014) by Caleb C — 24 Apr 2015
Somewhat like last years "Skeleton Twins" except a lot less dark and with a little less heart in the writing. Although, I did come to love these characters by the end and this story really had in the making of it, something of a great pilot episode for an HBO series.
I didn't want to leave these characters in the end and it did leave me wanting more. Nick Kroll was surprisingly brilliant here in the first serious-ish role, I've seen him in. This movie also had me once again really becoming a fan of Bobby Cannavale in a second great supporting role this year (the first being in Danny Collins).
What really saves this film though and making it something that I would re-watch over and over again for though is the chemistry between the two leads here who are brother and sister (Rose Byrne). I could definitely recommend this film to any brother and sister movie time night or just anyone who wants a feel-good movie that isn't overly preachy.
This is yet another one, I'll be adding to my personal favorites of the year.
