Review of Adrift (2018) by Nitpicker . — 04 Sep 2018
Based on the true story of Tami Oldham Ashcraft and Richard Sharp, who sailed directly into Hurricane Raymond in 1983. Richard was thrown overboard and died and Tami drifted for 41 days until rescued, relying on celestial navigation.
If you're more interested in the story, she has a 1998 memoir about the ordeal titled "Red Sky in Mourning". She still sails to this day. As for the movie itself, I found it to be too long and wishing it would have played out straight instead of jumping between past and present.
The Richard reveal at the end was OK but I don't feel it was even needed. As for the relationship, it didn't feel like they knew each other for all that long to be taking about love and marriage, in the movie that is.
The actor's performances were adequate but nothing special either. All in all, it's passable to watch, but the length of the movie and some scenes being too long felt like it could have benefited from editing.
I never got the sense I was watching a feminist movie. This was a true story after all. But even though it's a true story, I felt I had seen this movie before. It's very similar to other lost at seas movies.
So you won't get the sense your seeing anything different. There were many times in the film I found myself saying "OK, I get it already, can the movie get to the point?" I mean really, you could have told this whole story in 20 minutes.
