When terrific filmmakers misfire, they tend to do it hugely. Atom Egoyan is a terrific filmmaker, and this is a sensationally enormous misfire. Awful almost on a scene-by-scene basis, preposterous, overly convoluted, inexplicably and pretentiously political and just plain ridiculous, this is a well-meaning mess from beginning to end.
Oh lordy.
