Review of Adoration (2009) by Weston M — 18 Apr 2010
1: It seems to have been reasonably well received by most critics, but it didn't work for me. I sensed it would be pretentious, precious, and overwrought from the opening moments. I'd say it's too polished and over thought to be effective.
It simply reeks of artifice. It feels like a bad theoretical exercise we're forced to sit through. It failed to generate much emotion on my part apart from incredulity and revulsion. The new media aspect of it simply seemed ludicrous.
The teenage boy character and actor just seemed to think way too highly of themselves. The same goes for many of the other actors. They play their parts in far too serious a manner. The endless conversations and arguments seemed to drone on and on like a bad discussion group.
Egoyan has obviously made good films before this one, but he's embarked on a far too ambitious project here. This one fell flat; very flat.
