Review of Admission (2013) by Ricky R — 01 Apr 2013
Wrongfully billed as a comedy, this dark-romantic dramedy is actually an engaging story about a woman who suddenly comes to understand that she doesn't have all the answers. Tina Fey and Paul Rudd play off of each other perfectly, bringing a little light heartedness to some of the film's darker elements.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is Lily Tomlin, who turns in the film's heaviest performance. While there are moments that are funny, most of the laughs are brought on through subtle moments. It turns out that Admission is more of a coming-of-age story set years after the tribulations of the teenage years.
The film is fun and at times romantic, but the dark threads cannot be overlooked. Of course, in my opinion, it is these darker threads that make this film stronger than other romantic comedies, adding a sense of realism to characters that don't quite get the answers to life's harder questions.
