Review of Admission (2013) by Thomas W — 02 Jul 2013
Tina Fey and Paul Rudd together should equal comedy gold; but that isn't really the case here. With more elements of drama to offset the small snippets of comedy, this perplexing dramedy is at times boring and overly long.
I am certain both stars read the script so I don't know what they were thinking ... two funny stars cannot easily make unfunny material liter or funnier. Director Paul Weitz -- perfect with About A Boy -- has a slight misfire here with a story that simply isn't that interesting as the two main characters are high-brow but dull.
Tina Fey ("Thirty Rock", Date Night) stars as a Princeton admissions officer who has a very high rate of denying applicants. Paul Rudd (Role Models, Clueless) stars as a new high school teacher who believes one of his new students is perfect for Princeton and MUST be accepted.
He meets her and tries to schmooze her ... all while it is revealed that the student could very likely be a child she gave up for adoption X-many years ago. It just sounds like a side-splitting comedy, no? It isn't .
.. even with two highly gifted comedians in lead roles. I'd mentioned that this is perplexing and it is ... why is this not funny? Is it the story? The dialogue? The stars simply not being funny? Is it all of the above? Sadly .
.. it might be all of the above. I'd recommend skipping this -- and I am a fan of the two leads -- and watching a better rom-com instead ... such as, uhm, Clueless.
