Review of Addams Family Values (1993) by Johnny T — 28 Mar 2011
It is a rare feat to make a sequel better than its predecessor but here Sonnenfeld manages to do just that. Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston are given a lot of one-liners and payoff gags, of course, but what's funny is the stuff that comes in between -- the real affection with which they embrace each other, and the way they delight in their unspeakable lifestyle. Like the first Addams Family, this continuation of the macabre clan's misadventures is really just a string of sight gags and one-liners.The good news is that the one-liners are much funnier than the first time, mainly thanks to the increased input of screenwriter Paul Rudnick. New, well-developed characters add dimension to this batty satire, creating a comedy much more substantial than the original.
VERDICT: "Full Price" - My second highest rating (Positive to Mixed reaction). This is a rating to a movie I view as very entertaining and well made, and definitely worth paying the full price at a theatre to see or own on DVD. It is not perfect, but it is definitely excellent.
