Review of Adaptation. (2002) by Brendan M — 09 Dec 2010
I'm a big Charlie Kaufman fan (Eternal Sunshine..., Being John Malkovich) and I stumbled upon this movie when flipping channels during it's final scenes and decided I definitely needed to see it.
if the whole movie was as riveting as the final act maybe it would have been worth it. but for the first hour and half it is narcissistic and indulgent, the exact things that the Charlie Kaufman character in the film is struggling with as he begins to write himself into the script he's working on.
I see the irony here and must admit that it is strikingly original as a screenplay, but the struggle fictional Charlie deals with in the form of a lack of story in adapting his screenplay is the same problem that haunts this film.
there is no plot to speak of. the acting is fantastic and there are quite a few very thought-provoking lines, but the poignant dialogue is erratic and misfitted. I wish it could have been so much more, but perhaps as it was for Being John Malkovich, multiple viewings are required.
it's too bad though, because I will never watch this film again.
