Review of Adam's Rib (1949) by Artemus W — 11 Jun 2007
Sub-par Tracy-Hepburn pairing which ultimately fails in its whimsical attempt to deal with the radical-for-its-time concept of the "New Woman." We see the prototype for the now-classic female lawyer paradox: while the presence of an educated, successful female attorney is a positive, progressive image, her ultimate recognition of hierarchy in the form of both her husband's and the law's dominance over women and justice reflects the gutting of feminism via mainstream liberal values.
Female lawyer pictures of the 1980s and 1990s followed a similarly disappointing formula.
