Review of Adam's Rib (1949) by Patrick L — 27 Dec 2009
Said to be the best of the hepburn/tracy comedies, it's the only one i've seen, so I can't compare it - however, the writing is smart and snappy, though not spastic like 'bringing up baby.
' the chemistry between these two is plainly magical, bordering on dangerous and thrilling during every scene. the contrivance of the plot sets them up as opposing lawyers in a landmark battle of the sexes case, a courtroom 'mr.
and mrs. smith.' the narrative reversals in the third act are hilarious and expertly played, helped by a wonderful supporting cast including jean hagen (of singin' in the rain fame), tom ewell (romanced by marilyn in 'the seven year itch), and judy holliday (before winning an oscar for 'born yesterday').
so many of hepburn's films are built around eroding her cold, dismissive demeanor, and spencer tracy is a perfect counterpoint, calling her on her shit - and nothing turns on a know-it-all more than that.
