Review of Action Jackson (1988) by Robin W — 13 May 2008
After memorable roles in the "Rocky" series and "Predator", it was finally decided to let Carl Weathers headline his own movie and play an action hero who would become a pop culture icon and spawn a very popular franchise of films.
It didn't quite work out that way. Even as eighties action films go, this one is spectacularly cheesy and stupid, and has such a messy, covoluted script that with all the talking required to explain it, they may as well have titled the movie "Plot Exposition Jackson".
Still, there are a couple of hilarious must-see moments, such as Jackson's forward somersault over a speeding taxi cab, his decision to drive a car UP THE STAIRS of the villain's home in order to catch him (wouldn't it have just been easier to get out and walk?), and at least one classic one-liner ("You nearly tore off one of his arms" "He had a spare!").
