Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Amy W — 23 May 2011
I thoroughly enjoyed the first 45 minutes of this movie. Then, it got super trippy⦠for a while. Then we got back to the plot, but I had lost some interest. And it was sooo long. However, boredom and confusion aside, I will say: I have always thought it a challenge to make a musical based on previously written music of one band.
âMamma Miaâ? made it look SO EASY! âMovinâ(TM) Outâ? totally succeeded, but not quite as seamlessly⦠Compared to those, âAcross the Universeâ? was definitely the worst. It used almost every single song as a transition piece, which, for a show so heavily comprised of songs, made it seem like the movie was in CONSTANT transition.
But, it was creative, touched on some intense topics, and the singing was great. I truly believe this movie achieved what it set out to do and has an audience that would appreciate and love it, but it just wasnâ(TM)t for me.
