Review of Across the Universe (2007) by Gavin S — 15 Feb 2012
You might be thinking: Another Beatles Musical? Ugh, no thanks. But this is well worth your while. Instead of just stringing together silly bits until the musical performances, the songs form a good chunk of the narrative, and it ends up working very well against the backdrop of the 1960s culture.
Involving some very talented musicians never hurts, and the "real" actors: Sturgess and Wood, both more than hold their own. Of particular interest to me were Dana Fuchs as 'Sadie' with obvious parallels to Janis Joplin, and Martin Luther as 'Jo-Jo', clearly the Jimi Hendrix figure.
If nothing else, just watch it and enjoy as a 2 hr Beatles music video. Gorgeous colourful work and dancing, and if it helps turn more people on to the Beatles, that's always worthwhile. Definitely recommended.
